"As the name says, it's a simple way to notify systems"

It's a simple way to send notifications via a suite of different avenues — push notifications, email, ... It has a robust API as well.
What do you dislike?
The organization of push-notification devices and topics, for some use cases, can be a bit opinionated... but it can be adjusted to fit most workflows.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Consider using the API for orchestration of device registrations, retry policies and other features. It is most robust.

we send rds notifications to db team and all other notifications to developer team. Real time notification helps us immediately correct issues as they arise.

Setting up a topic and subscription is dead simple.
What do you dislike?
I haven't found anything to dislike. Maybe I need to use it more.

During an emergency internet maintenance, I was able to use a simple up/down monitor on a service in the impacted datacenter, and trigger a page to the operations team when our service was reachable (provider finished maintenance).

The combination of Lambda, SNS, and SQS creates amazing messaging pipelines.
What do you dislike?
Vendor lock in. It's hard to complain, and I'm all aboard the AWS train, but it is still at the back of my mind.

If you aren't opposed to vendor lock in, this is a fantastic option.
