Terrible Communication from the team/ Slow product / Bad Support
Shopware is extremely slow! Their documented support is lacking, probably due to the fact that you have to pay for the support.
And we still had issue running the system behind a reverse-proxy and the support was pointless.
I would still be OK with it if it was just that! But, their attention to the grab money and run is fantastic!
We had an issue with transferring a license; transferred it in the new entity to cancel the subscription and cancelled it just in time, one year from the initial registration. Their public account system indicated cancellation was fine; one month later their accounting indicated that we still have to pay for an additional full year support! Their accounting-contact, although accepting he has no access, keeps on preaching how irresponsible it is to cancel on last moment.
So by the end of the day, we are stuck using a terribly slow e-commerce system, that we are forced to pay even if we cancelled within their limits of the system and that we can no longer update in our infrastructure behind a reverse-proxy.

Solid plugin system, enabling developers to modify many parts of the store.
Easy template system based on Smarty Template Inheritance allowing only to change parts of a page template where you need it. This makes it much easier to maintain templates and update the store.
What do you dislike?
Multistore configurations require buying a license and significantly raise the initial costs.
Recommendations to others considering the product
Install the OpenSource Edition. Play with the software, try to build up some realistic product configurations. check if you can configure some more advanced workflows you need. Check the Community Store for plugins that might help you.
Consult a Developer with solid Shopware experience to help you. Like other modern E-Commerce solutions Shopware is a huge system with hundreds of settings and it takes some time to learn how to set up a complete store.
Shopware is not a low budget solution.
Shopware can be used in the OpenSource Edition but chances are high you need one or more commercial plugins. License costs for plugins are quite expensive and you probably need a experienced Shopware Developer to get your store up and running.

The backend needs a bit of UI polish. Some plugins were better than others.

Keep it simple. Don't try to do too much own development and try to rely on the built in integrations (or Shopware certified plugins as much as possible.
